"Meet the Makers" is our series of blog posts featuring the many artisans that make work for our wonderful shop! Today we feature photographer, Joann Long, who has been involved with The Cheshire Union since 2017.
"About 7 years ago a friend of mine showed me her DSLR camera and I was fascinated by the quality of the pictures. I started researching different cameras, took several classes at RIT, and became a sponge for all I could learn about photography."
Joann Long is retired from both her computer consulting career and a mounted police style horse training business. Today, she continues to contribute to her community and assisting others. She is the former President of the Finger Lakes Photography Guild, chaired the club’s education committee, and donates her photography skills to the Genesee Country Village & Museum. In addition to her photography endeavors, she is a passionate volunteer firefighter for the Pittsford Fire Department. She enjoys walking her dog, Marley, and recently they completed the training for therapy dog service.
Joann continues to learn in this lifelong hobby. She particularly enjoys shooting nature and wildlife, but will try her hand at any subject for the fun of it. "When I travel with my supportive husband I kid him that I'm pretty much happy doing anything as long as I have a camera in my hand to creatively capture the moment."
Her photographs have been displayed in numerous regional galleries and exhibits, as well as publications and magazines like Life in the Finger Lakes, 55 Plus, Rochester Magazine, RIT Signatures Magazine, The Daily Messenger and the Democrat & Chronicle. She has earned top honors in several photography contests including the Idaho Field of Corn, Ontario Pathways Art Trails, and Life in The Finger Lakes Magazine.
