About the Class

This is a 4 week course running on Tuesday afternoons.

Dates: January 17th, 24th, 31st and February 7th. 1-4pm.

Learn watercolor techniques, composition and color mixing while creating a painting together. This is an intermediate level class, in which we all paint from the same photo.  We begin each class with a short discussion of last week’s work. I will provide a printed photo to each student to paint from. Using a small iPad or tablet is a great alternative. Subjects will vary. Students should bring their own supplies. A recommended supply list will be provided.

About the Teacher:

"I place a high value on learning to draw accurately as a sound foundation for painting. As a realistic painter, I share my knowledge of creating believable form, perspective, and space.  I teach students to sharpen their observational skills, plan their composition, and choose colors to enhance the mood they want to convey. I encourage personal expression and choice of subject matter. I strive to be a teacher that is nurturing yet still inspires focused and dedicated work.  I offer plenty of individual attention. I’ll  demonstrate techniques, guide critiques, and discuss the work of master artists."

As a contemporary representational painter and lifelong nature lover, Nancy Lane finds most of her ideas by painting outdoors. The art she creates on location or in the studio is about describing a deeply felt human connection to nature. Her paintings often suggest a narrative in the way her subjects are placed in relation to each other. She is interested in expressing emotion and beauty, primarily by the way light falls on a subject. The valleys, lakes, and mountains of her upstate New York home feature prominently in her art.

Nancy has been involved in the arts all her life. She spent her early years drawing animals and watching her grandmother paint. She has a BFA from MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) with study at Temple University in Rome and Parsons School of Design in NYC. She spent 30 years as an illustrator of award-winning picture books that celebrate the human-animal bond. She returned to oil painting in 2009, complementing her watercolor skills, and began painting outdoors. Workshops with prominent artists including Mary Whyte, Rob Liberace, Susan Lyon, Michelle Dunaway, and Jeff Hein continued her art education.
