About the Class

Discover monotype printmaking using Encaustic paint! Darlene Rayburn will lead each student through the old medium of encaustics.

What are "Encaustics"?

Encaustics are a unique and ancient artistic technique that involves using pigmented (colorful!) wax to create images on various surfaces. In our printmaking workshop, students will melt colored waxes onto an anodized aluminum plate, then "print" their design onto various types of paper: rice paper, mulberry paper, xuzn paper and sumi paper!

The wax can be manipulated and shaped on the surface with various mark making tools, allowing for intricate detailing and texture. The resulting encaustic prints often showcase a luminous and layered quality, with the wax providing a distinctive depth and sheen to the finished artwork.

This class is best suited for teens and adults; we will be using hot metal plates and hot wax on a metal surface.
