About the Class

Neal Allen will lead this Saturday morning drawing class. This class is geared toward beginners who want to improve their basic drawing skills - observing, mark-making and more accurately rendering a drawing. Students will learn not only how to observe an object, but also how to analyze and assess their own work.


Each class will be different, with one building minimally on the next. Students are welcome to choose any one or combination if necessary! Time is 10:30am - 12pm each day.


May 30th: Basic measuring, mark-making, building a drawing from simple geometric shapes and gentle critique.

June 6th: Review of class one, learning how to portray volume and weight by varying line thickness and value, drawing an object using negative space.

June 13th: Describing contour using continuous lines, adding contour to a drawing using hatching and cross-hatching.

June 20th: Observing a light source, finishing a drawing using shading, highlight…

    Basic measuring, mark-making, building a drawing from simple geometric shapes and gentle critique. Students should bring a pencil (preferably 4B), a kneaded eraser and sketchbook.
